When shopping for clothes for a baby, what’s wrong with buying baby pajamas a size larger? A new born baby grows so quickly so why not save some money?
- How many newborns are born a newborn size anymore? (Try saying that 10 times quickly!)
- Doesn’t it make economical sense to buy baby pajamas a size bigger so they last longer?
- Isn’t it more comfortable for baby to sleep with clothing a little loose anyway?
According to Blurtit.com “Most babies are born on schedule between 37 and 40 weeks and usually weigh somewhere around 6 pounds 2 ounces. Their average length can range from 19 to 21 inches.”
This puts them squarely in the newborn sizing according to our baby pajama size guide. One month sizing begins at 10 pounds, and thankfully very few babies are born so big. Most baby nightwear fits “0-3 months” which is considered to be 7-13 pounds – usually too big for a newborn baby.
Okay, so why does size matter?
#1: It’s a suffocation issue.
Pajamas are intended to be worn snug so they don’t wrap around baby or in blankets while moving in their sleep.
#2: It can affect their comfort and circulation.
If sleepwear is too loose a baby – especially a newborn – can bend their leg inside their pajama leg and get it stuck folded, which affects their circulation.
#3: Too much air space increases flammability.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) states that whether the pajamas are flame retardant or not, too much space in a child’s pajamas permits oxygen to flow and makes the clothing flammable.
As you can see, it is very important to choose the correct sizing when purchasing baby pajamas. If you need more assistance on choosing a size for your gift, please refer to our Baby Sleeper & Toddler Pajama Sizing Guide.
When I had my first baby the ladies at my church gave me a baby shower after Cara was born so they knew the gender – and therefore the color & style of clothing to give as a gift. I received gifts for baby pajamas from the newborn size up to 24 months. These ladies were so generous I didn’t have to buy new clothes for a long, long time which is a wonderful gift to a young couple who were learning how to live on one income after the baby arrived.
